Thousands of Brazilians have protested in several cities over the past ten days, and organizers are planning for another march in Sao Paulo on Monday night.

Rising prices for public transportation was the original cause of the the protests, organized by Movimento Passe Livre. Since then, Brazilians have joined protests for various other reasons, including rising crime, income inequality, and corruption.

The protests are quickly becoming a sign of a weakening public confidence for Brazil’s President Dilma Rousseff ahead of the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

The protest’s nickname “Salad Uprising” was coined in response to the arrests of those who carried vinegar with them as an aide against police tear gas.

Tumblr blog Salad Uprising is reporting to collect stories and pictures from demonstrations across Brazil (Reuters cannot confirm individual posts on external blogs; please message the Reuters on Tumblr if you seek more information on any news).

When police tried to disperse the crowd on Thursday in Sao Paulo, violence erupted, injuring dozens and leading to nearly 200 arrests.

Many people have asked me about this, because 1. there are a lot of Brazilian nerdfighters, 2. I am a huge fan of Brazil and see the last 20 years of its history as a model for other nations in the developing world, and 3. I like soccer a lot.

My honest opinions may be unpopular with Brazilian nerdfighters, and that’s okay. I might be wrong. I’ve been wrong before. Also, I don’t know much about Brazil, and I don’t want to pretend otherwise. But since you’re all asking:

1. 100% of the protesters’ concerns are legitimate.

2. I think the World Cup (and the Olympics) will happen regardless of whether they are a net economic good for Brazil. (I think they’ll be a net negative, but it’ll be closer than many people are saying.) Brazil has already spent more than 3 billion reals to prepare for the World Cup; yes, that is a ridiculous number, but making the World Cup a failure will not make it a less ridiculous number.

2a. Given that, I think non-Brazilians who are planning to go should go and spend a lot of money. The time to have the conversation about whether it was a bad idea to host the World Cup has passed: The cost of abandoning the World Cup (or the Olympics) at this point would be prohibitive and more damaging to the Brazilian economy than going through with it and hopefully getting a reasonable windfall from foreign tourists spending a lot of money.

3. I understand that money spent by tourists will be unevenly distributed, but that’s been the case for decades, and in Brazil at least, the rising tide really has lifted all boats: after decades of rampant inflation and extremely high poverty rates, absolute poverty has fallen by half since 1994.

3a. That said, poverty is still much higher in Brazil than it should be, and corruption remains a huge problem. (Compare Brazil’s corruption levels to Chile’s, for instance.) Income inequality is extremely high. Crime is a vexing problem, and a very complicated one. Public transportation costs should not have gone up (for a variety of reasons, but mostly because it amounts to a tax on non-rich workers, who are exactly the wrong people to tax).

4. HOWEVER: It is important to note that real and important economic progress had been made in Brazil in the last 20 years. For that progress to continue, corruption, income inequality, and crime must decrease. These protests are important because they remind the government that all is not well and that progress is fragile and only counts if it continues. They hold the government accountable to the people. But as far as the World Cup goes: Most of the money that will be spent on the World Cup has already been spent. It is gone. Let us hope that the crowds are large and that most of that money can be recouped.

So I’m on youtube catching up on videos (not signed in just looking up the people I’m usually subscribed to) and this video by TheAmazingAtheist, its titled 33 Reasons NOT to be a Feminist! (A Refutation)

Apparently he’s going off this article 33 reasons to be a feminist
and basically just being inflammatory for the attention and views.

Keep in mind there are professional youtubers (people who make money off their videos because they’ve qualified to be Youtube Partners) who don’t get these kinds of views.

And you don’t think going to report this guys inflammatory rant consider this.

Just last week Nerimon (Alex Day) uploaded a video called Big Girls in Costumes. Rachel Whitehurst made this video in response and because they share much of the same demographic (young teenage girls) Alex Day put his video on private AND TOOK THE ADS OFF. See this post where he discusses it.

I’m saying we have a voice, that people are going to TheAmazingAtheist to look at his sexist rationalizations where he gets to put down feminists and excuses rape culture. So go report his video and make sure not just to down vote it because put also to report it because whether or not he’s making money on this video he has the type of viewership that can get him paid on other videos.

Feminism all too often means attempts (sometimes successful attempts) at censorship instead of engaging in a productive dialogue. They think that certain ideas should not be allowed in the public sphere. What’s the matter, femfascists? Afraid to compete in an open marketplace of ideas?

Even if you disagree with TJ, don’t fucking censor his videos. Refute them if you want to but don’t just false flag his videos. That just makes you look childish and stupid and doesn’t help your argument at all. It’s pretty much the same kind of tactics the religious right use to silence their opponents.

You know I started to wonder and doubt myself afterwards for flagging his video. I honestly did. Thinking, “am I perpetuating censorship instead of discussion? Maybe I overreacted.”

But turns out its a lot more complicated than that. Originally my end goal was to get him to see that his video was inflammatory with no expectation that anything terrible would happen to him (youtube lets people get away with worse). I don’t have a big following and I’m not in the habit of flagging people. But to me that image (and the original post he’s refuting) had a lot of valid points. He was bullying that OP because if we say an image is violent and triggerworthy then thats something personal. And its the sort of imagery we have to live with. How are we going to convince people otherwise with people like him telling us were overly sensitive.

And guess what? That image is a trigger for me, I took it personally that he’s silencing someone, and by extension silencing someone with a voice similar to mine.

He’s called me a femfascist and sent his following after me. That’s bullying. So maybe I look childish and stupid but the price I’m paying for flagging and posting about it is way worse than anything I could do to him.

I understand how you feel, the video is completely ridiculous and the points he makes are awful and cave in on themselves but honestly I don't see why it needs to be taken down. Two of my friends and I sat down and watched it together and would pause after every point to argue with the computer screen and discuss among ourselves about it. It took us more than 3 hours to finish the video and while we all agree it was highly illogical, we don't see any point in taking it down.

Film and kung fu legend Bruce Lee, who broke barriers on the silver screen and television with his all-too-short career in the 1960s and 1970s, has been honored with a 7-foot statue in Chinatown’s Central Plaza.

Following the 40th anniversary of Lee’s sudden passing, and Chinatown’s 75th year in Los Angeles, the statue will be on permanent display once local businesses raise the $150,000 needed to install the bronze Lee.

For a glimpse into Lee’s significance for many of his young fans:

John Kreng, 44, staked out a spot with his friends hours before the statue’s unveiling, trading Bruce Lee stories and reminiscing. Growing up half-Thai and half-Chinese in an all-white neighborhood in Maryland, Lee’s films were inspiring, Kreng said.

“Here’s this hero who looks like me on the screen,” Kreng said.
